As raid-goes progress through the Lich King's lair, IceCrown Citadel, the Supreme Overseer of the Cult of the Damned, Lady Deathwhisper, is the second boss encounter of the raid. Consisting of two phases, Lady Deathwhisper will test the awareness of all raid members as well as the raid's overall DPS output. Having a significantly high DPS output will make this fight much easier.
Depending on the phase, Lady Deathwhisper will have different abilities. Knowing and understanding her abilities for each phase is the most important part of the encounter.
Phase One:
- Adds, Cult Adherent and Cult Fanatic.
- Shdowbolt - Lady Deathwhisper will randomly cast Shadowbolt on a raid member.
- Dominate Mind (25-man only) - Mindcontrols the target and increases the damage the target does by 200% and healing by 500% lasts for 20 seconds.
*Important: CC targets that are mind-controlled, never kill them.
- Mana Barrier - Damage will deduct mana instead of health.
Phase Two:
- Frostbolt - Does 35-38k damage, **Interruptable**
- Frostbolt Volley - Sends a frostbolt at all raid members, 10-13k damage.
- Summon Vengeful Spirits - Summons invulnerable shades that chase a random target, once they reach that target they will explode dealing large amounts of shadow damage.
- Touch of Insignificance - Puts a debuff on her main target (tank) that reduces threat generated by 20%, stacks 5 times.
*Important: Tanks need to take turns talking to make sure that they are the ones getting hit not the dps, if one tank gets to debuffed he will become useless for the rest of the fight.
Both Phases:
- Death and Decay - Deals 4500 damage a second to all units in the affected area.
During phase one it's all about killing her adds. The Cult Adherent and Cult Fanatic, it is important to understand the adds, as phase one is completely focused on the adds:
Add Spawning 10-man:
- The adds will either spawn on the right or left side of the room.
Add Spawning 25-man:
- Adds spawn on BOTH left and right side, with one extra that comes from the entrance.
1.) Living Adherent - Basic Spellcaster can cast Curse of Torpor.
- Curse of Torpor - Debuffs the target, causing the next spell they cast to have a 15 second cooldown, for example: Shaman casts Lesser Healing Wave while under the affect of Curse of Torpor, Lesser Healing Wave cannot be used again for 15 seconds.
*Important: This should be immediately be dispelled, or else it can really cause a raid to wipe.
2.) Living Fanatic - Basic melee add with a MS style attack and a deadly cleave.
*Both of these adds have two other forms, of either being "empowered" or "reanimated"
1a.) Empowered Adherent - Same as Living, but has a uninterruptible AoE spell.
2a.) Deformed Fanatic - Double melee damage, this target must be kited.
1b.) Reanimated Adherent - Immune to magical damage.
2b.) Reanimated Fanatic - Immune to physical damage.
It is important to know that during this phase there is no need for a tank to be on her, because she casts random Shadowbolts at the raid and has no aggro-table. The idea for this phase is to, kill adds as fast as possible. Certain adds like the "Deformed Fanatic" should be kited and not tanked, they hit extremely hard and have a MS style effect. Empowered Adherent's are a very powerful enemy, they have an AoE, when paired with Death and Decay it really brings the pain to the raid. Once they are down the raid is to switch to Lady Deathwhisper. Watch out for Death and Decay, and what mobs are present and the rest of the fight is simple, kill adds -> Deathwhisper. Once Lady Deathwhisper runs out of mana the fight goes into phase two. In this phase Cult Adherents and Cult Fanatics will no longer be spawned, instead she will summon Vengeful Spirits which chase a random target, when they reach their target they will explode and do 25k AoE shadow damage. She will cast Frostbolt on her main target, dealing 37k damage, this can be interrupted, and should be. Another new spell she will acquire is Frostbolt Volley, sending a Frostbolt to all raid members dealing about 10k damage, this is an instant cast so there is no interruption.
The hardest part of this fight is the transition from phase one to two. Phase two is harder than phase one, due to the fact that the tanks need to switch which is always a hard concept for many people. Also the large amount of AoE damage makes this phase much more healing intensive than phase one, the Frostbolt Volley, Death and Decay and explosion from the Vengeful Spirits alone are not a problem, but together they are deadly. The key to victory is to make sure that her main Frostbolt attack is interrupted as much as possible, so communication is crucial. The better it is interrupted, the less damage on tanks, the less healers need to heal them and the more attention they can give the rest of the raid.
Useful hints/tips:
- Lady Deathwhisper enrages in 10 min.
Phase One:
- Avoid Death and Decay no matter what you are doing, even casting a heal.
- Phase one is much less mana intensive then phase two, so healers should conserve as much mana as possible.
- Kite the Deformed Fanatic, tanking it is near suicide.
- (25 man only) CC the people mind-controlled, this way they are disabled from messing with the raid, and will return to the raid after the debuff wears off.
- A very common thing to do in 25 man, and maybe 10 man if the group is very geared/experienced; is to put a melee dps (should be the best melee dps of raid) on Lady-Deathwhisper for the entire phase. This will make phase one shorter, but there will be less damage on the adds, if the group is good enough there should already be adequate damage on the adds.
Phase Two:
- Stay on the right and left side of the stairs that lead to Lady-Deathwhisper, this way when the Vengeful Spirits spawn it is easier to see and avoid them.
- Have a quiet vent and communicate about interrupting the Frostbolts, this makes them a benign issue.
- DPS should spread out, this way if a spirit makes it to a target it doesn't hurt the entire raid, and this way Death and Decay will effect less targets on its initial cast.
- Save Blood-Lust/Heroism and all other cool-downs for this phase, since this phase is harder, and generally the phase that a group will wipe on, its best to make sure it ends fast. This will also make it less stressful on the healers.
